Description

A house is a piece of art where you can live ín!

A stately property (nationally listed) – once the Raadhuis, the town hall, of the Obdam municipality – located in the heart of the picturesque village of Obdam. This impressive object is a feast for the eyes and the perfect residence for those who love classic architecture.

The object has a long and rich history, which started when the first stone of the original Raadhuis was laid in 1874. The building was also used as the so-called Polderhuis, where the regional Water Board had its offices. The Obdam municipality merged with Wester-Koggenland in 2008, after which the Raadhuis lost its official function and was sold as a private property with the combined permit for housing and offices. In 2020/2021, the building was extensively renovated, including new English roof tiles, and made entirely up to date with modern-day requirements as to comfort, insulation, and safety. The Raadhuis has a rectangular floor plan and consists of two floors plus the attic floor. The hipped roof has its ridge parallel to the street, with a centred roof turret containing a bell. The front façade includes a clock. The front, east, and south façades are of red brickwork adorned with yellow brick and/or natural stone details.

Even though the building is entirely modernised, it still exudes the original nostalgic atmosphere of years gone by. The former town hall was designed by architect A.C. Bleijs in the popular Eclectic architectural style and still retains many of its period features.
The front façade shows recessed details and has arched windows with six windowpanes and other unique ornaments. A distinctive feature are the lion sculptures above the front door, holding the escutcheons of the province of Holland and the Netherlands. On the base of the right lion we can read "A.C. Bleijs architecte Hoorn" while the base of the left lion includes a text referring to a sculptor from Brussels.

The centrally positioned recessed entrance with its imposing double doors includes a video/intercom system and leads to the vestibule with coat racks and the broad hallway of 17m² with gorgeous relief details and plaques showing the names of the members of the Municipal Council and the Water Board who commissioned the building. To the left is a gallery of 30m² with a 3.6-metre-high ceiling with a rosette ornament that shows a line saying (loosely translated): “All what happens under this rose stays under this rose”. Other features in this room are the stained-glass window with the coat of arms of the Van Wassenaer family (3 crescent moons, which they took as spoils during one of the crusades) and a magnificent mantelpiece. A door leads to the more recently added conservatory (12m²) that serves as the gallery entrance. To the right of the hallway is a large bedroom (30m²), also with a ceiling height of 3.60 m, and a beautifully appointed bathroom with a whirlpool, a double washbasin, a separate shower, and a toilet.

Turning left at the end of the main hallway is another hallway with the meter cupboard, two lavatories, one including a urinal, a built-in closet, a laundry room, and access to the garden on the side of the house with another newly built conservatory (18m²) and a parking space. Back in the main hallway, the broad staircase leads to the...

1st Floor: very spacious landing (13m²) with double doors to the former council chamber (ceiling height 4.70m), now used as the living room (63m²). This splendid room includes another magnificent mantelpiece and has double doors to a recessed French balcony. An arched door in the living room gives access to the fully-equipped kitchen with two fridges and two freezers, a kitchen unit with a high worktop, a gas hob including a wok burner, an extraction hood, and a dishwasher. Back on the landing, a second staircase leads to the...

2nd Floor: The attic offers a huge bedroom (63m²) with a corner bath, the clock mechanism, and looks up to the wonderful roof construction.
